Description | Ivory with animals. Muscarella Publication: "At the left is an upright winged lion on one rear foot confronting a sphinx. The lion's other feet touch those of the sphinx; its wings - only one is shown - are small and curve down behind the waist; a short tail is visible below the dowel hole. The sphinx, also on one leg, touches both legs and muzzle of the lion. His face is almost all nose; he has short flaring hair; there may be a short beard. His wing is small and has one thick border like the lion's, but curves up behind the waist, perhaps symbolically; a short tail exists. Three incised circles decorate the upper border (cf. no. 142) above which there seems to have been another panel. The plain bottom edge, and the narrow bands at the right and left edge are intact. The reverse has irregular scoring." |
