Description | Oblong with rounded base, pointed corners, oval top slightly constricted by bunching vertical strips together. Material leaf stem of palmetto; twilled plaiting in under 3 over 3 weave; 2 heavy splints go from middle of one rim under and up almost to rim on other side. Decoration: below rim 3 strips of red and purple in alternating rows, band of plain then 3 rows of alternating red, 2 plain, 3 more red but staggered to form isolated units (by skipping one vertical strip with each successive horizontal one), another band of plain, 2 rows of purple like last red elements. Rim finished with a hoop and bound with hickory bark(?). Dyes may be native. Material identified by John Witthoft. |
