Description | Complete snaffle bit assembly composed of four elements joined together. Bar shaped cheek pieces threaded onto tapering rods ending in rings; the pointed ends of the rods are then bent so they interlink and form a flexible coupling. The cheekpieces are free to slide along the bit and to rotate. they are roughly pentagonal in section with slight carination on the outer side. There is a cylindrical collar in the center for mounting on the bit and a ring near each end along the back edge for tying the reigns. the rods of the bit itself are decorated with three rib-like moldings just below the ring. the latter is also articulated along its circumference into three sections. Each of the four parts seems to have been cast in one piece. Vari-colored green patina with splotches of whitish material. L cheek piece broken in two near swivel, but completely preserved. |
