Wooden spindle for spinning cotton; the knob or weight is the nut of a wine palm. The spindle has a little yarn on it, running off into a tuft of raw cotton [unbeaten -- only the seeds picked out.] In a separate piece of paper is a little of the cotton with the seeds still in it.
