Description | Wooden bowl ('umeke) with rounded bottom. Variegated wood. Used for storing and serving poi, meat and fish. The wood is probably kou (Cordia subcordata), which was the preferred wood for such bowls. Mended in three places. On the bottom are two large patches, called poho. On the side, near the rim, is a mend called pewa, a small hourglass-shaped piece of wood tapped into a depression bridging two sides of a crack. |
