Toward a ‘Biography’ of a Manuscript: A copy of the Qur’an from 12th c. Iran

This copy of the Qur’an (Penn Museum NEP27) has a colophon page, frequently reproduced in handbooks, dating its copying to H559/ 1164CE in Hamadhan. A detailed examination of the codex was carried out by a seminar on codicology held in spring 2012. The codex presents interesting case of book ‘restoration’ that must be closely examined as it points to a complex history of usage. An examination thus far reveals that there were several interventions to the integrity of the original; many folios bear major repairs, patches and replacements. The following aspects of the codex will be presented to a panel of experts and participating workshop attendees.
