Description

The Legacy of Zeus: The Mt. Lykaion Excavation and Survey Project

Mount LykaionThe cult of Zeus, and the Greek god's early origins, continue to be major themes of excavation and research at the Sanctuary of Zeus at Mt. Lykaion in Arcadia, where an international, interdisciplinary team from the Penn Museum, the University of Arizona, and the Greek Archaeological Service works. David Gilman Romano, Director of Greek Archaeological Projects, Mediterranean Section, and co-director and field director of the project, offers this update. A Mycenaean ash altar discovered on the southern peak of the mountain suggests early Zeus worship befitting the mythology of the birthplace of Zeus. The story continues: in August 2009, the Modern Lykaion Games, a contemporary version of the ancient festival, was celebrated at the archaeological site.
