Archaeologists and Travelers
in Ottoman Lands

Part of an 18-month program on the
beginnings of American archaeology
in Ottoman Empire during the
late nineteenth century, the role of
renowned artist Osman Hamdi Bey
in the development of cultural policies
for archaeology, and the engagement
of archaeologists from the University
of Pennsylvania and its Museum, the
symposium "Recovering the Past"
will preview an exhibition featuring
unpublished materials from the Museum
archives, two paintings by Hamdi Bey
and objects from the Museum's Near
East section. Symposium co-sponsored
by The Joukowsky Family Foundation,
the Turkish Cultural Foundation and
Penn's History of Art Department,
Middle East Center, Center for Ancient
Studies, and Halpern-Rogath Curatorial
Seminar Fund.
