Description

MAYA COUNTDOWN TO THE APOCALYPSE
A Tuition-Free Lecture Series

Camden County College in partnership with Penn Museum presents a lecture series based upon the exhibit Maya 2012: Lords of Time. University of Pennsylvania anthropologists will discuss aspects of Maya culture in the ancient city of Copan, Honduras during the Classic period. They will reveal the importance placed on time and calendars as well as other components of the society.

For over two thousand years the Ancient Maya tracked time through a series of different but meshing calendar systems. These calendars were more than a reckoning of days, but the workings of a time-order universe and the means by which Maya kings exerted their authority and control over their subjects. Simon Martin, co-curator of the exhibit, will describe the basic workings of these systems and explain how they contributed to belief in the advent of the apocalypse on December 21, 2012.
