The African Gallery features art and artifacts from diverse cultures throughout the vast continent. View some of the sophisticated bronzes and ivories created by the artisans of Benin, a powerful empire existing in the 1600s that still thrives today. An ostrich egg water container, zebra-hide jewelry, and poison-tipped arrows are among the materials from southern Africa’s savannah and desert regions. A remarkable collection of secret society masks, fetish figures, beadwork, and textiles from West and Central Africa speak to the complex social systems in place for centuries before Europeans “discovered” and colonized the continent.
Public tours are included in Museum admission and do not require advance reservation.
