Visitor FAQ

Is photography allowed in the Museum?
Yes. Photography is permitted for private noncommercial use except where otherwise posted. Photographs cannot be published, sold, reproduced, transferred, distributed or otherwise commercially exploited in any way. Tripods are not permitted in any gallery.

Can I sketch in the Museum?
Yes.

Are baby strollers allowed?
Yes.

Is the Museum wheelchair accessible? Do you have wheelchairs?
Yes, and Yes. See the Museum map to find accessible entrances and elevators. Wheel chairs are available at the Kress Entrance.

Is there a place to eat in the Museum? What are their hours?
The new Pepper Mill Cafe is now open. The Museum cafe serves breakfast, snacks and lunch. The cafe is open Monday, 10-1; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:30-4:30; Wednesday 8:30-7:30; and Saturday and Sunday, 10-4:30.

Can I videotape in the galleries?
Videotaping with small, personal recording devices is allowed for non-commercial use. See our filming request policies for professional filming.

What are your hours?

Can I bring food or drinks into the galleries?
Sorry, food and drinks are not permitted in the galleries.

Do you have air-conditioning?
Some of the galleries are air-conditioned. The following galleries do not have air conditioning and are quite hot in the summer months: Chinese Rotunda, Roman Gallery, Upper Egypt, Mummies, Lower Egypt.

Do you have audio tours?
Yes! A one-hour "Highlights of the Galleries" audio tour is available in English and Spanish for free download on iTunes. The Highlights audio tour will soon be available in the galleries or a $5 fee. Groups of 10-30 people will be charged $4 per person.

Are docent-led tours appropriate for my group?
The education department provides docents to groups from pre-k to senior citizens. While making your reservations, the tour coordinator will ensure that your educational needs are met depending upon your individual request.

When should I make a reservation for a tour?
The sooner the better! As soon as you know that you would like to make arrangements to visit us for guided tours, please contact us. Keep in mind that March-June are the busiest months for guided tours. On average, groups make arrangements to visit two months prior to the reservation date.

How long do docent-led tours last?
Docent led tours generally last one hour.

What is the chaperone policy?
It is very important that you have one chaperone for every ten students that are under the age of 18. Groups that do not have enough chaperones will not be admitted. Please refer to the chaperone checklist for further details.

How many individuals does a guided tour accommodate?
No more than 30 people may be a part of a docent-led tour. If there are more than 30 people in your party, please call the tour coordinator to discuss other options.

Do I need to alert you of any special accessibility needs my party members may have?
Yes. Please let us know about any accessibility needs so that we may better accommodate you upon your arrival and throughout your visit.

Are the guests allowed to take pictures? What about video recordings?
Pictures may be taken throughout the museum. Video recordings are not permitted unless the proper paperwork has been submitted and approved.

Is there somewhere to eat lunch for students?
Yes. We have a large student lunchroom that is available on a first come first serve basis. We also have a full service café where snack and lunch items can be purchased. If your group of ten or more is planning to use the café, please tell the tour coordinator when making a reservation.

Museum Map

FIRST FLOOR

The Egypt (Sphinx) Gallery houses one of the finest collections of Egyptian architecture on display in the United States. A 13-ton red granite sphinx, the largest in the United States and believed to be the third largest in the world, dominates the gallery. There is also a display of materials from the beginnings of Egyptian history, and the founding of a unified country of Upper and Lower Egypt including ivory tags that bear examples of some of the earliest hieroglyphs found in Egypt, dating over 5,000 years ago. The Islamic Near East Gallery houses material that comes from the central lands of the Islamic world: Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey and Egypt. These are the very regions where the more ancient cultures were discovered, such as Sumer and Assyria, Pharaonic Egypt, Neolithic and Bronze Age Iran, and Asia Minor.

SECOND FLOOR

The North America Gallery focuses on key cultural concepts and social practices of enduring importance to the four thriving tribal groups of the American Southwest.

The Mexico and Central America Gallery introduces you to the pre-Columbian civilizations of Mesoamerica, which flourished before the Spanish Conquest. Major traditions represented here include those of central and western Mexico, the Gulf Coast, Oaxaca, the highland and lowland Maya of Yucatan, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and a variety of Central American cultures.

The Africa Gallery includes objects from Morocco to South Africa and everywhere in between. The current gallery contains approximately 360 artifacts dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries.

THIRD FLOOR

The Classical World offers more than one thousand ancient artifacts – including marble and bronze sculptures, jewelry, metalwork, mosaics, glass vessels, gold and silver coins, and pottery.

Penn Museum holds nearly 25,000 artifacts from the area that encompasses modern Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Jordan and Lebanon, and parts of Syria, the largest collection of artifacts from this region. A sampling is on display in the Canaan and Israel Exhibition.

The Buddhist Asia and Japan Galleries trace Buddhism from its origins in India, through its development along ancient land and sea routes into Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Tibet, China, and Japan. Completed in 1915, the Chinese Rotunda is one of the largest unsupported masonry domes in the United States, housing one of the finest collections of monumental Chinese art in the country, covering some 4,000 years of Chinese history.

The Egypt (Mummies) Gallery displays carved reliefs, stone coffins, and three-dimensional sculpture that testifies to the superb craftsmanship of Egyptian artists and sculptors throughout that country's long history. Explore human and animal mummies, tomb artifacts, and funerary objects and materials used in the mummification process. Learn about the ancient Egyptian belief in an afterlife, and the complex funerary practices they developed over thousands of years.

Accessibility

Parking and Wheelchair Entrance
The Museum's Trescher entrance, 3260 South Street, and the Kress entrance (east side) are wheelchair accessible.

Handicapped parking is available in Lot 7, the parking garage adjacent to the Museum at the corner of South Street and Convention Avenue, with its entrance off Convention Avenue.

A limited number of wheelchairs are available for use while visiting the Museum. Visitors can ask for wheelchairs at the Trescher or Kress entrances.

Wheelchair Accessibility in the Galleries
Public elevators are available to take visitors to most galleries. The Lower Egyptian gallery, Islamic gallery and the Amarna galleries are only accessible by stairs. If you need elevator access to these galleries, ask for assistance at the Daniel G. Kamin entrance desk; a Museum staff person can escort you there via a freight elevator.

There is no elevator access to the Harrison Auditorium, open during some events and special programs. Visitors who can not use stairs may enter from the outside, 33rd Street entrance (it is advisable to call in advance).

Restrooms
The Kress entrance restrooms are equipped with wheelchair accessible stalls.

The men's restroom outside the Harrison Auditorium and the women's restroom in the Kress Entrance are equipped with baby changers. Men's and women's bathrooms in the Kress Entrance feature sink sizes to accommodate children and adults.

General Museum Hours

Penn Museum is open Tuesdays, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Wednesdays, 10:00 am to 8:00 pm; and Thursdays through Sundays, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays.
