Family Second Sunday Workshops at the Penn Museum

Join a Penn Museum educator every second perspectives about ancient and contemporary cultures through hands-on activities.


Each Workshop includes a craft, touchable artifacts, and gallery activities. All activities are free with admission donation. Attendees may drop in anytime between 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm to participate in the Workshop. Family Tours are conducted at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.

Attend a Family Second Excavators Club. Club members who attend three Family Second Museum members at the Household level receive one free pass towards the surprise.

Destination Near East: The Midas Touch

Explore the newly installed exhibition devoted to King Midas. Get inspired by the artifacts in the exhibition and work with foil to etch your own golden object to take home.


Destination China: Chinese Calligraphy Scrolls

Calligraphy is a revered art form in China; hanging scrolls have been discovered in tombs dating back to the Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE). In this drop-in workshop, participants select their favorite Chinese characters to mount upon a banner. Then, guests can take an interactive tour the China Gallery.


Destination Egypt: Amulet Necklace

Bring the whole clan for Mummies Day! Amulets were worn by ancient Egyptians for protection. Work with beads and clay to craft an amulet necklace. Discover other ancient Egyptian magical objects on a family gallery tour.

In this workshop, craft your very own sistrum, a sacred percussion instrument of ancient Egypt. Learn about the sistrum and other instruments from around the world on a guided family tour.


Destination Native America: Basket Weaving

It’s Native American Heritage month. Explore the diversity of vessels in Native American Voices on a guided family tour. Fashion your own basket to take home.


Destination Greece: Classic Coins

Get hands-on with coin replicas from the Mediterranean. Work with foam and metallic markers to etch your own coin to take home. Visit the Greek Gallery on a family tour.


Destination China: Special Squares

Mandarin squares, or rank badges—large and colorful embroidered badges featuring animal insignias—were once sewn onto the coats of officials in Imperial China. Design your own square through collage. Go on a mini-tour of military history.


Destination Egypt: Hieroglyphic Valentines

Happy Valentine’s Day! Show your love to your mummy, daddy, sibling, or friend. Work with mixed media to create a valentine, complete with ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.
