Egyptian Section Research at the Penn Museum

The Abydos Survey for Paleolithic Sites (ASPS) examines early modern human behaviors in an area along the Nile Valley route out-of Africa.

Abydos is the cult site of Osiris, king of the afterlife and god of the netherworld. It was a place of pilgrimage and considered sacred throughout Egypt's 3000 year history.

The Pyramid complexes of the Old Kingdom were intended to perpetuate the immortality of pharaoh through continued rituals and offerings for the dead king.
