The Shuar
The Shuar live in an area east of the Ecuadorian Andes known as the Montaña. Their reputation as fierce warriors is well-earned, and they have been able to maintain their cultural traditions and independence.

They hunt with guns, bows and arrows, blowguns, spears, and traps. Weaving and basketry, as well as hunting, are the domain of men.

The shaman resolves disputes, cures diseases, and provides leadership.

Founded in 1965, the Shuar Federation represents the Shuar to the government and other institutions. The Federation uses radio and schools to preserve and maintain Shuar culture and history. The Federation’s greatest success was in forcing the Ecuadorian government to recognize Shuar territory and rights.
