Online Activities at the Penn Museum in July
PHILADELPHIA—While the Penn Museum remains temporarily closed, it has a full line-up of online activities for July, including an adventure focused on ancient alcohol, a virtual book club, and a class in forensic anthropology.
In partnership with Philly Loves Beer, the Penn Museum is hosting Ancient Alcohol: After Hours—a virtual tour and beer tasting on Thursday, July 2 from 8∶00-9∶30 pm. Grab a Philly Loves Beer-curated six-pack and chat with archaeologists, brewers, and beer experts about ancient drinking practices, ways drinking culture has evolved over time, and influences on modern-day brewing techniques. Uncover ancient Greek drinking games, one of the world’s oldest wine jars, a Mesopotamian queen’s gold beer straw, and the science of recreating a beverage served at a feast hosted by King Midas. Register here.
Between the Lines, the Penn Museum’s online book club, offers a new, culturally connected book each month. In July, the featured book is Barracoon: The Story of the Last “Black Cargo” by Zora Neale Hurston, which documents an 86-year-old man’s firsthand account of being captured, the Middle Passage aboard the Clotilda, and the years he spent enslaved until the end of the Civil War. The three meetings will be moderated by Dr. Deborah Thomas, R. Jean Brownlee Professor of Anthropology at Penn and the curator of Bearing Witness: Four Days in West Kingston, a special exhibition at the Penn Museum. The book club begins July 6. Register here.
Real Bones: Adventures in Forensic Anthropology goes behind the scenes to examine what the TV shows leave out—the real scientific process involved in identifying a decomposed body. Discussions will involve how science has helped to solve morbid mysteries, along with the approaches to (and limitations of) forensic cases. Taught by Dr. Janet Monge, the Curator-in-Charge of the Physical Anthropology Section at the Penn Museum, the course runs for four consecutive Thursday evenings beginning July 9, from 6∶00-7∶30 pm, as part of the Museum’s Deep Dig adult classes. Register here.
The full calendar of events at the Penn Museum, including Date Night, Morning Coffee Breaks, and weekly online happy hours, can be found here.
