Back by popular demand! This virtual tour and beer tasting will uncover the culture of drinking in the ancient world in conjunction with modern day brewing techniques. There’s beer that you should buy to go along with the tour—see below. Cheers!
Drinking together has been a tradition for thousands of years, and we aren’t going to let a pandemic stop us! Put the kids to bed, log on, grab a drink, and let us be your designated driver as you virtually explore how our ancestors partied like it was 5000 BCE. And don’t you worry, your tour guide Dr. Olivia Hayden and our resident Beer Scientist Dr. Matt Farber will be available to answer your history and beer related questions along the way!
Check out one of the most popular ancient Greek drinking games (you should definitely try this at home), zoom in on one of the world’s oldest wine jars, learn about a Mesopotamian queen who drank her beer out of a straw, and learn all about the science that went into recreating the beverage served at the funerary feast hosted by King Midas.
This tour and beer tasting will be led by a mix of both history and beer experts!
Dr. Olivia Hayden will be your virtual tour guide and resident archaeologist for the evening. She has worked on archaeological excavations in Israel, Greece and Penn's excavations in Turkey at Gordion (where the residue for Dogfish Head’s Midas Touch was found!).
Jason Perkins, Brewmaster at Allagash Brewing Company, will join us from the brewery to discuss some of their unique brewing techniques that utilize old Italian wine jars, discuss why they chose to brew with this method, and give us a peek into their unique brewing style.
Dr. Matthew Farber, Assistant Professor of Biology and Director of the Brewing Science Program at the University of the Sciences, will join us to talk about modern brewing practices, how they have been influenced by our ancient ancestors, and why we no longer drink our beer through a straw.
