The earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident that struck the Tohoku region in Northeast Japan on March 11, 2011 (3/11) prompted an array of local, national, and global musical responses. In this lecture presented by the Penn Cultural Heritage Center, Dr. Nana Kaneko, Mellon/ACLS Public Fellow, Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative, considers how music making can contribute to and complicate recovery efforts in the continuing crisis of disaster.
