Celebrate the Penn Museum’s newest exhibition Moundbuilders: Ancient Architects of North America, and learn more about the real work of archaeology, in North America and around the world at this special event co-sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America Philadelphia Society. Meet archaeologist and Moundbuilders curator Megan Kassabaum and other Penn Museum researchers. Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Center for the Analysis of Archaeological Materials (CAAM), where archaeologists and other scholars are making new discoveries about the ancient past via analyses of ceramics, metallurgy, faunal and skeletal remains, and more.

Free with General Admission.


Schedule for the day:

11:30 am
Cuneiform Tablet Workshop: Learn to write cuneiform like an ancient Babylonian!

12:00-12:30 and 3:00 to 3:30 pm
The window is open at In the Artifact Lab: Conservation in Action. Ask a conservator about her work preserving ancient artifacts.

1:00 pm
Archaeologist Megan Kassabaum, curator of the new exhibition Moundbuilders: Ancient Architects of North America, talks about Cahokia, the first Native American city, and the long history of mound building leading up to it.

1:00 to 3:00 pm (Select a time)
Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Center for the Analysis of Archaeological Materials (CAAM), and meet scientists in a variety archaeological disciplines. Tours leave from the Trescher Entrance every 15 minutes. Groups are small; sign up early!

2:30 pm
Take a tour of Moundbuilders: Ancient Architects of North America with archaeologist and curator Megan Kassabaum

Ongoing 11:00 am to 4:00 pm:

  • Indiana Jones Obstacle Course: Don the hat, watch out for the giant boulder, and take the challenge!
  • Scavenger Hunt throughout the Museum
  • Discover Ancient Rome with hands-on reproductions, the opportunity to try on military gear, and more—at a special station
  • Crafts for kids of all ages
