Description

Koshare (Ckwa). Ornate, colorful, seated figure with sliced-open watermelon sitting on blue lap, holding watermelon slice in figure's proper left hand and a thin, rolled, teal object in figure's proper right hand. Four beige, raffia pom-poms extend from head and ears attached to painted depiction of black and white-striped head-dress. Black hair tied back with red string. Red and blue beaded necklace with multi-colored shell medallion. Wears white and black boots with three metal studs on sides of each (six total studs). Skin colored red-brown with black body paint. Open eyes and toothy smile. Black bracelet on proper left wrist with metal turtle medallion attached. Signed: "F. Healing" (Fleton Healing).

Description

Butterfly Maiden Kachina. Carved, wooden figure standing on flat, oval undecorated base with white boots and leg coverings and black trim. Figure wears brown-black, knee-length garment with red-and-green-striped trim and waistband. White cape with red, white and brown-striped trim drapes shoulders and hangs to thigh level. Figure's light brown arms/hands bear a bracelet on each wrist. The proper right hand holds two feathers while the proper left holds a white dowel (broken off feathers?). Headdress similar to 2009-10-35 with multi-colored semi-circle terminating in five projections of alternating red arrows and black and white feathers (one feather broken off). Facial decoration also like 2009-10-36 with black rectangular eyes and cylindrical forehead projection. Figure wears green, red, and white necklaces and green teardrop-shaped earrings. Large bundle of white and brown feathers projects from back of head, as well as straight, long brown hair falling on back beneath three red strands hanging below feather bundle. Signed: "Edward Calnimptewa Butterfly Maiden".

Description

Small maiden figure with decorated olla (jar) on head. Figure wears a closed garment decorated with wavy, incised lines at top and bottom hems as well as four incised designs depicting stylized dragonflies. Figure's face has incised, slit-like eyes and circular, incised mouth. Incised lines also depict hair, framing face and continuing around head to rear pony-tail hair-do. Flat base with no feet shown. Signed: "A. Lewis".

Description

Sohu (Star) Kachina. Carved, wooden figure standing on undecorated, circular base with green, red, and yellow boots with black trim. Above this are yellow legs (leggings or body paint?) with a repeating black cross design just below two black knotted ties beneath knees. Knee-length, green skirt is decorated with repeating, vertical, black wavy lines as well as feather- (or leather-?) like carved flaps alternating with (and overlapping) the wavy lines. Black waistband is painted with repeating gray ovals decorated with turquoise dots. Light brown-red torso is partially covered with straight, light brown hair and beard. At least six alternating feathers and stars project from head (2 in place, rest broken off). Large brown and white protruding eyes and red-rimmed mouth depicted with black zig-zag line. Small black cross and crescent moon painted on face. Figure holds long, green and white staffs, one in each hand. Signed: "Les Lacapa Jr. Hopi Sohu Kachina (star)".
