Description | Ornamented calabash bowl. "Ornamented calabashes come mainly from two places: Cahabon and Rabinal. The styles of the two places: are very distinct; but in either case the ornament consists of carving and painting, varnished over with a certain animal varnish [see 29-60-91.] The Cahabon coloring, as you will see, is mainly black and red, and the natural whitish yellow of the calabash. The designs run greatly to birds and armadillos. I don't know why the armadillo should be the favorite animal in Cahabon calabashes, but so it is." For rabinal calabashes, see 29-60-79. This represents musicians. |
