Description

Sommerville: Pale Onyx. The Emperor Augustus, in sacerdotal or pontifical veil, a portrait of his own time. Gold Rings - Cameos, Case RRR.

Vermeule: Pale Onyx. Cameo. (Modern gold ring setting) Bust of Julio-Claudian Emperor with toga arranged for sacrifice, termed by Sommerville "The Emperor Augustus" but probably copied from the principal figure on the Ara Pietati relief walled up in garden facade or Villa Medici.
