Description | Wooden Katsina doll carved from one piece of wood. The face is bisected vertically into halves painted blue and red. An elaborate, tableta headdress is attached to the head painted black, green, blue and red. The headdress has corn and flower imagery. A carved juniper collar is wrapped around the neck. The body is painted green with white symbols on the arms, back and legs. A kilt with sashes is carved and painted at the waist. One hand holds a rattle and the other a bundle of leaves. This figure is the Sio Hemis (or Sio Humis) Katsina, borrowed from the Zuni. Made by Norbert Tewa. (Colton, H. 1959 #155, Wright, B., 1973 #216) |
