Box Lid

Rectangular. Painted animal representations on all outer surfaces. White, green, light red, and black. Lid: 2 1/2" deep strips (the lower edge decorativ-ely cut back) nailed to three sides, making thick edges to fit over box. Single row white shells set in front strip. Top of lid: painted and incised and shallow gouged identical profile animal heads on two side "fields" facing narrow center field with small red and black design. Undersurface almost all covered with painted "animal design". On undersurface, top of design is at front of lid; on outer surface, at back. Box: sides made of 4 pieces nailed together. 3 1/2 " boards nailed to 3 sides as bottom border; widest at bottom, upper part decoratively cut back. Front & ends have incised lines and shallow gouging as well as paint. On front- centered large face, body parts, and two profile faces below. Larger faces take up almost entire surface of ends and back.
