Description

Cf. 8758 (o.s.): and for instruments in which the "elbow" which supports the stem is replaced by the representations of human heads, see 8759, 8760, AF1985; head on "elbow", 17058. These three (8758, 8759, 8760) are from the Ogowe R. (Fang). AF254 has the membrane (goat or antelope skin with the hair) pegged on. The sides of the sounding-box are covered with deeply incised geometrical ornament (solid and bisected lozenges in rows, etc.). Originally eight strings. For type, cf. also 17058, AF1984, AF1985 (including the type of incised decoration).
