The Fall 2018 issue of Expedition includes four articles on various topics: a primer on how to read and understand coins, a story on the history of a musical instrument called the Ottoman tanbûr, a piece on conservation training at the Museum’s excavation at Gordion, and an update on recent student research conducted at our own Center for the Analysis of Archaeological Materials.

A lot is happening at the Museum, which we cover in this issue. Check out the latest news on our Building Transformation. Read about exciting, new public programs that will be launched in the fall. See some of the amazing objects that will be featured in our new Africa and Mexico & Central America galleries, due to open in September 2019. Enjoy our columns “In the Labs” on Emily Dickinson’s gardens, and “Global Classroom” with news from Learning Programs. The Museum community was saddened to learn of the passing of Harold L. Dibble, Curator-in-Charge of the European Archaeology Section and Francis E. Johnston Term Professor of Anthropology; read our “Portrait” on the last page of this issue.
Kristen Pearson began working on Expedition as a work-study student in her sophomore year. As she gained experience in editing and writing, she was promoted from Assistant to the Editor to Assistant Editor to Associate Edi-tor. This is the last issue she worked on, as she graduated from Penn in May. See her piece on page 20 on the Philadelphia Mint. We will miss her terribly but wish her the very best as she begins a Fulbright year in Mongolia before beginning graduate school in archaeology.
