Description | Sommerville: Jasper-onyx, with Marcasite. Vespasianus, ninth Emperor of Rome. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case S. Vermeule: Jasper Onyx. Cameo. (Modern gold pendant setting). Bust of a man facing, sword belt across left shoulder bears letters B R F. Sommerville terms the likeness "Vespanianus, the 9th Emperor of Rome." but the features suggest some Hellenistic portrait not unlike the so-called Menander type. Late 18th or early 19th. |
