Description | Black sarong (tembe me'e). The black sarong is considered the basic item of clothing in the Donggo ethnic costume. (Tembe me'e, "black cloth," refers to all garments made of black material, but has come to signify only the sarong.) This typical tembe me'e is made of heavy cotton thread dyed black with locally gathered indigo. It has fainted dark blue horizontal stripes and a blue border, frequently made of predyed synthetic thread. This example made of locally grown, hand-spun cotton dyed with local indigo. Hand sewn. Made ca. 1955, Ese Wawo hamlet. Anne Justs's catalogue is on deposit in the Musuem Archives and in the Registrar's office. |
