Description

Plaid sarong with figures (tembe paleka-salunka). In 1982-83, in Mbawa, the first experiments were made of introducing supplementary weft figures (salunka) into traditional plaid sarongs. Most sarongs of this type were woven using synthetic yarn, but some were done in cotton as well. This example is coarse cotton (kafa galia) with supplementary weft of predyed synthetic (nggoli). machine sewn. Made in 1983, Kambentu hamlet. Black, with unbalanced plaid of brownish-rose, white, dark blue. Brownish-rose panel, with three vertical bands of yellow & white butterflies.
