Description | Sommerville: Antique paste intaglio. Ulysses and Penelope. Beautifully striated, emerald tint with iridescence. Antique Pastes, Case WWW. Vermeule: Glass paste, imitating banded Agate. Intaglio. (Unmounted). An elderly warrior standing to right, clasping the hands of a lady standing to left. Sommerville identifies the two as Odysseus and Penelope and this seems quite logical. The gem appears to be Italic, of the period of the Roman Republic. |
