Description | A Hemis (or Humis) Katsina mask. The mask is made from hide with paint bisecting the front vertically. One side is painted yellow and the other has traces of darker paint, each side outlined in red. The area between the eyes is painted black with white hash marks. Designs of corn are painted in black and white around the forehead. Corn is also painted on the back of the mask. A tube mouth is attached and painted black with a slot carved out outlined in red and white paint. Long straps are attached to the top and sides of the mask, possibly to attach a tableta headdress. |
