Leggings

Man's leggings. Native tanned hide (deer?), tapered shape from top to bottom ending in two long tabs that would fall over the foot. Long fringe at sides, short fringe around bottom; attached beaded strips (native tanned hide). Each has four sets of blue geometric designs (horizontal bar with three vertical bars atop it done with pony beads in lazy stitch) set against a white background. Yellow and green pigment applied: solid areas of both colors and alternating green and yellow stripes on the inner portions of both leggings. All sewing done using sinew. Condition: Some tears in the hide; some loose bead-work with attendant bead loss. Piece of surgical tape affixed to top inner edge of legging "b" reads: "Donor: Henry D. Downing."
