Description

Figure seated eating a lizard, its head held between his feet. Label -- "A Tohunga eating a lizard." Figure facing back, rounded head, tongue out being attacked by manaia. Northern style. Purchased at auction from J. C. Stevens, London, on April 16, 1912. The catalogue description reads as follows: "Adze handle, finely carved all over, phallic in design. The principal figure, a Tohunga or priest is shown performing the sacred rite of eating a lizard (Kakariki)."
