The Fall 2014 issue of Expedition is truly an international edition, with stories and photographs from Iraq, Kenya, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Mexico, and Guatemala.
We begin with Reports from the Field, which highlights Museum-sponsored research in Satu Qala, Iraq by Lauren Ristvet and Cinzia Pappi, and Calakmul, Mexico by Simon Martin. Our article on the father of underwater archaeology, George Bass, is presented next in two parts: an account by friend of the Museum Cynthia Eiseman of her experiences as a graduate student at Penn in the late 1960s working in this new field, and a review article on Archaeologist Beneath the Sea by Bass’ friend and colleague, Jim Muhly. This is followed by a short piece by Gareth Darbyshire and Christopher Ray on building a 3-dimensional model of the Gordion citadel, and a photo essay by Museum photographer Jennifer Chiappardi on the children of Maasailand. Jennifer Houser Wegner has written a fascinating story on the Museum’s sphinx: where it came from and how it arrived in Philadelphia. And in From the Archives, Janet Simon describes a World War II friendship that began with a meeting in Guatemala. Finally, we introduce a new column, Field Trip, which focuses on food, travel, and culture; in this issue, Al Leonard takes you to the Central Market in Athens, with its remarkable sights, sounds, and smells. 2014 marks my 5th year as Editor of Expedition. We thank readers who have given us feedback on the magazine. Please continue to let us know what you think and tell us about the stories you would like to see in Expedition by writing me at jhickman@upenn.edu.
