Description | Chief's staff (ua). Long, slender staff of medium- brown wood, flaring slightly towards end. Smaller than P4806. Top is carved as janus faces with furrowed crania, prominent cheekbones. One long ear with small round plug, other ear broken off. On one face the eyes are round pits (once inlaid); on the other face one eye is a round pit without inlay and the other eye is inlaid with a bone ring and obsidian center. Vertical crack in one face. Carried by important chiefs as symbols of power and authority. |
