Pyxis

Concave pyxis with lid. Nearly flat base (flaring slightly). Two concave sides. Low conical lid with tall spool knob. Low ring on undersurface of lid in lieu of flange. Buff ware, cream slip; painted in red and dark brown. Pyxis: interior solidly glazed except for reserved areas at center and side of floor, the lower wall immmediately above, and the upper wall just under rim. Glaze on top of rim. Two narrow bands below that, on exterior, followed by thick band. Below, alternate dot zone, followed by further broad band. Two narrow lines above vertical bars or rays at base. Lid: raised disk at top of spool reserved. Rest of spool glazed except for three reserved bands. Band around base of spool from which radiate short blunt bars or rays, enclosed by two narrow circular bands. Main decoration beyond exactly duplicates that on center of wall of pyxis: two broad bands enclosing alternate dot zone.
