Description | Sommerville: Sardonyx - Diogenes the Cynic in his tub. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case H. Vermeule: Sardonyx. Cameo (Unmounted). 1700-1850 Neo-Classical. Diogenes the Cynic in his tub, listening to readings by an elderly philosopher seated at right. The dog, a pun on "diogenes" sits on the tub, and the scene is lit by a crescent moon above. A composition based on an ancient relief. |
