Description

Jug with raised spout, one handle, plastic "eyes," and ridge at junction between neck and shoulder; squat form. Fine, very pale brown (10YR 8/4) clay, with decoration in reddish brown (5YR 4/3) to black paint and added white (no longer preserved) paint. Wiped with water and burnished. Painted on spout, upper part of neck and shoulder, lower shoulder, and lower body; two friezes on shouder, each consisting of three zigzag bands. Added white: dots on band at juncture of neck and shoulder; lines on handle; perhaps other designs also. Restored from fragments; some sherds missing; surface eroded. For the shape compare Hawes et al. 1908: pl. 8, nos. 4-5 (Gournia); Bosanquet and Dawkins 1923: 28, fig. 18a (Palaikastro). For the decoration see Hawes et al. 1908: pl. 8, no. 2 (Gournia).
