Description | Page of woodblock-printed classical Mongolian text, with Chinese page numbering. It is stamped with the description: “Print from ‘Original’ MONGOL PRAYER BOARD. These Mongol Prayer Boards are from LAMA GAGEN in FAR OUTER MONGOLIA, some 8 weeks camel caravan across the wastes of the GREAT GOBI DESSERT,” and with a Chinese date of November 1922. Two impression of Chinese-style seals both read “Ba Ruande 巴軟德”. This was the Chinese name of the dealer Edward Barrett who was collecting materials of this kind for sale to US collections in the 1920s. A museum “received” stamp has the date 1924. |
