Description | Bark cloth with black grid pattern made from bamboo rollers, with square brown, leaf stencils and black overpainting. Stamps with parallel lines along one edge. Probably Fijian (Kaeppler). Similar to pieces from Western Fiji (See Cunie 1986:127). (see also Ka Hana Kapa #364, p. 247, Ornamented end of a Fijian sula. Formerly in the collection of the Peabody Academy of Sciences, now the Peabody Essex Museum (PAS accession number E3174 stenciled on the back). |
