Description | Sommerville: Agate. Rude Carving, of the ninth century. Maculated Pebbles, Etc, Case JJ. Vermeule: Agate. Cameo. (Unmounted). Bearded head of a Saint or Philosopher to left., called by Sommerville "rude carving of the IXth century A.D." Gems such as these were mounted in the enriched covers of illuminated manuscripts and in processional crosses. |
