Description

This wooden figure is a Chief kachina, the Hopi Aholi, Priest Assistant with painted turquoise cone shaped mask and details in a rainbow of colors. Elaborate figure holding a staff with feathers in the proper right (PR) hand and a painted gourd container and wooden object hang on strings in the proper left (PL) hand. At tip of head is a bundle of green, brown, and greyish-white feathers. The figure wears a fur/hair collar ruff, and fur surrounds two protruding decorations at both sides of the head. The decoration on the proper left of the head is a panel while the one on the proper right is a disk. Figure wears a cloak with a painted image of Muyingwa, one of the gods responsible for the germination of seeds. Yarn ornaments are tied on the wrists and legs of the figure. "H. Sholton HOPI" is written in black ink on the bottom of the proper right boot.
