Description

The object is identified as a Hopi guard or Warrior Maiden kachina. It is a painted wooden carved figure on a wooden base wearing a black dress, white sash belt with fringe at proper left side, and black painted canvas cloak with leather design elements. The black face has round yellow and black eyes, open mouth, red tongue, and an asymmetrical hair style including ten feathers. The figure holds a gourd rattle in her proper right (PR) hand, a bow in her proper left (PL) hand, a quiver and three arrows at her back decorated with fringe and silver sequins. Her boots include leather fringe detailing. The underside of the base reads in ink: R. S. Pentwa Hopi Warrior Maid.
