Description | Woven hat with a raven design painted on in black, green, and red. A wooden raven's beak is attached to the front above a painted, skeletonized animal. The beak is painted black with red lips and abalone shell inlay for teeth. Feather designs are painted along the sides and back of the hat. A zigzag or "tree shadow" design is woven into the lower half (Frances Paul, 1944 p. 54). Top-stock of three spruce root basketry rings painted green with an ermine pelt attached to the top ring. A hat band encircles the center of the interior with animal hide straps attached to affix the hat to the wearer's head. Technical notes: twined, close twined, two-strand, diagonal/twill twining, three-strand. |
