Vermeule: Chalcedony-Sardonyx. Cameo. Filleted or diademed bust of Alexander the Great to right. The portrait is copied from sculptures of the Hellenistic and Roman periods which show the more dramatic emotional portrayal if the young conquerer. The cameo recalls, among ancient portraits, the over-lifesize marble head of Alexander in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
