I love the Penn Museum for three reasons: it encourages curiosity, promotes learning, and celebrates diversity. Learning from history gives us a deeper understanding of who we are and who the people around us are. It gives us a much stronger culture, a much stronger society, a much more forgiving society. It makes us better people.
Calling all Penn Alumni! We want to see you when you’re back on campus for Alumni Weekend. In addition to free admission all weekend for Penn Alumni and their guests, check out all the Alumni Weekend events happening at the Penn Museum, May 17-20.
Tour by Dr. Lauren Ristvet, Lead Curator of The Giorgi Family Foundation Gallery and Dyson Associate Professor of Anthropology Join Curator Dr. Lauren Ristvet on a thrilling virtual tour of the recently-renovated “Eastern Mediterranean Gallery: Crossroads of Civilization” Gallery. For more than 4,000 years, the region that now encompasses Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Palestinian Territories, and Cyprus has been a nexus where priests, merchants, armies, and immigrants created a cosmopolitan culture with global significance. The reimagined signature gallery uncovers the area’s remarkable technological innovation, as well as the personal stories of its people, with nearly 400 artifacts from the Middle Bronze Age (2,000 to 1,200 BCE) through the Ottoman Period (1299 to 1922 CE), revealing how innovations rooted in this diverse region still impact the world today—from the alphabet to the origins of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Followed by Q & A.
